ADULT DANCE

Last week we had YOGA as our first installment of adult dance classes. Cathy Lortie led us through some introductory poses that were great for strengthening our bodies and allowed some relaxation time as well. The benefits of Yoga are many. Positions in yoga can increase flexibility, increase lubrication of the joints, ligaments, and tendons. Yoga acts in a wholesome manner on the various body parts. It massages all the organs of the body, tones muscle, and improves posture.

This week we will present adult ballet. Class begins at 6:30. For $10, students will receive a one hour lesson in beginning ballet. You will learn terminology but mainly focus on the exercises that benefit us in the form of stretch and strength. This class should be a nice progression from yoga into next week's lesson in Modern. Ballet promotes better posture, sculpts and tones your body, develops poise and body awareness, helps relieve stress, and promotes flexibility. I found this link that may provide some insight into the connection adults have found with attending dance (ballet) classes. http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Benefits-of-Ballet-Lessons-for-Adults. There is also proof that exercise and participation in weight baring activities such as sports and dance (ballet) can reduce bone loss and prevent osteoporosis. Many of the things we will cover (and covered in yoga) can be repeated at home - if done several times a week you will find the most benefit.

Contact us for information about adult dance: inmotion@twcny.rr.com or 785-5513.

Career Day

Today I had the opportunity to present 4 twenty minute sessions as part of Case Middle School's Career Day. I had a great time and wished for more time with the students. I spoke to them about being a dance teacher, a business owner, and the other performance related careers for people to also consider. We tried to do a little hip hop too and often ran out of time...oh well! I want to thank one of our dance parents, Carla VanWormer, for inviting me to be a part of this event. A lot of time, effot, and energy goes into putting something like this together - especially if it's a first time venture - believe me, I know. If the interest is sparked in one student to continue their education, stay in school, etc. then it will have been a success! Thank you Carla for caring about kids!! Next week I'll be teaching an after school session at IHC - check back for info. on that! :)

Weather Policy

Last night they said 8-12, this morning it was 4-8, now I see 6-10 inches of snow possible...I can't believe it! Anyway...time for the weather policy for this year.

We will NOT close when or because schools close. We will make our own determinations based on road conditions in the Watertown area whether to hold classes or to cancel them. If you choose to not venture to classes please be sure to contact us - especially those in smaller classes. We will make every effot to make a decision by 2:00 each day there is weather. We will post information on the blog and on the answering machine. If we do cancel on or before 2:00 we will contact WWNY, WWTI on the TV and the BORDER radio station. If conditions worsen after 2:00 or when classes are in session we will personally make phone calls to cancel classes. When in doubt, don't hesitate to call - leave a message if you get a machine and someone will always get back to you!

Fingers crossed - we stay GREEN for Halloween! :) Happy Haunting!
-Shereen

LOST and FOUND

Please take note of the many items left behind in our first month of classes. Look on top of the cubbies, pull up a chair and really look up high... if anything is yours, please take it home. Anything there in November will be donated to the Salvation Army instead of allowing the pile to grow out of control. :) Sweaters, pants, dance shoes, shirts, hair accessories - you name it, we have it.
