Nutcracker Costume Information - as of 2013
Keep in mind that anyone needing alterations should let us know ASAP if you do not have someone to do it for you. If your child is selected or volunteers to be a filler during the party scene they should check out the costume needs for boys or girls and keep in mind what their costume changes are.
If you have old black laceless jazz shoes that you want to donate to our Nutcracker supply - we would take them!! :)
Little Boys: Knickers, boy dress shirt or white turtleneck, vests, newsboy style hat, ballet pink tights, black jazz shoes (no laces). Hair should be worn in a bun or slicked back as much as possible. NO BANGS!
We have some of these things and you are invited to come sign out things and fill in with what we do not have. To make knickers, simply shorten old pants to just below the knee w/ or w/o elastic. If you cannot do this, please let us know so we can assign someone to help take care of your needs. We most likely will have enough vests - we are working on the hats as we seem to be missing some.
Older Boys: Knickers, boy dress shirt, pink tights, black jazz shoes, hair worn in bun/slicked back. We have vests and hats to give you. Little girls & Older Girls – if you are dancing in the Nutcracker March or Dance of Friends, you will have a dress that is hand made and property of In Motion School of Dance. Hair needs to be in curls. You have a couple options – wear it in curls and pull the sides/front back OR secure a bun and purchase a curly hairpiece. We may be able to provide these to you – will need to check the availability of our supplier. Girls should wear a large bow in their hair to match their dress. All girls need pink tights, pink leather ballet shoes with laced tied, trimmed, and tucked in. Girls that are NOT in the March but would like to be on the stage as filler or have been asked to do so – you will need a holiday dress that fits the time period. Longer skirts, crushed velvets, rich color tones should help you in finding something. We do not have extra dresses. Be sure not to choose anything flashy, sequined, or adorned with loud gems. We are staging a party from the early 1900s.
Adults – we desperately need some adults for our adult dance, party scenes, and especially to play Clara’s parents. I know I have a couple volunteers but we’ll need a few more!
Men – Tuxedos will be provided by Nelson’s Tuxedo – official Dry Cleaners of In Motion School of Dance and The Nutcracker! You will need to go there to be fitted. They are located on upper Coffeen St. near JCC.
Women – we have dresses that have been made – they may just need to be sized to fit you - we can arrange a time/date to do this.
Dolls – pink tights, pink ballet shoes, hair bows, white doll costumes, gloves** I think we were going to see about having these Dry Cleaned this year??
Mice – Mouse costumes are just 2 shows old. Children should wear black leos underneathe and pink tights with pink leather ballet shoes (laces tied, trimmed, and tucked). The mouse headpiece should be stuffed with batting - if it is not, make sure someone does this during tech week. The silver pipe cleaner whiskers fall out easily so try to keep track of yours or you'll be running to the craft store to replace. Hair should be worn up in a bun.
Mouse King – Mouse costume items, red cape
Soldiers – Blue soldier vest & hat will be provided. You will need your own white turtleneck, plain black pants, black jazz shoes (no laces), black socks/tights. You will need a black or nude leotard as an undergarment for changing your clothes backstage (if you are coming from the party scene). If you are a boy in the party scene you may want to consider wearing the white turtleneck instead of a dress shirt to ease the costume change. Hair should be in a bun. No long haired soldiers please. ☺
Nutcracker Prince – jacket, pants, beard, gloves, crown – studio owned. You will need to get sized for shoes at Nelson’s Tuxedo – unless you have a pair of black dress shoes.
Clara – Clara dress and bow (length may need altering), nightgown & cape. Pink tights and pink ballet shoes. **This is all new updated costuming!! **
Snowflakes – pink seamless tights, pink leather ballet shoes. You should all have your snowflake dress. You will be assigned a baggie with snowflake accessories... you are responsible for these - they are very delicate. A nude bodice as an undergarment is needed for the white bodice. Hair – bun. I am working on order a new headpiece...
Angels – pink leather ballet shoes, nude/white/or black leotard for under. Angel Costume and wings will be provided. Hair comb provided as well. **ORDERING NEW** will receive at a later date
Spanish – Pink Tights, pink ballet shoes. Nude bodysuit for undergarment. Top bodice, tutu, overlay. You may need some pieces sewn on.
Chinese – Costume provided plus pink tights, pink shoes, black or nude leotard for undergarment. Chop sticks for the hair – we have these too.
Arabian – brand new costumes
Russian – Black Spats, white v-neck shirts, red sashes, black fur Russian hats – all provided. You will need pink tights, black leotards, black jazz shoes. You will also need your own Black Capri length dance gauchos. Hair – lower bun so hat can fit. Might be time to order a new costume for next year?? :) MAY ORDER NEW!!
Marzipan – you will need pink tights, pink ballet shoes. Marzipan costume with pink hair ribbon and arm poufs. These ribbons and poufs CANNOT be replaced - there are NO EXTRA! please keep track of...
Mother Ginger – you will need pink ballet shoes, pink tights. We will assign you two piece colored velvet M.G. costume – most likely will need altering. Hair – buns
Waltz of the Flowers – you will need pink ballet shoes, pink tights. Blue/pink flowers costumes and Hair - bun - Costumes were handwashed by Nelson Dry Cleaning last year.
RETURN INFO!
xxxxx ALL Nutcracker costumes should be dropped off TO THE STUDIO between 10-1. They MUST be returned as they were signed out to you. If any new major ripping, holes, etc. are found - you will be responsible for the cost of the garment. If minor issues occur, please alert us to those ASAP. All garment bags must be returned in good condition as well. There are cloth ones and others from the dollar store. We would ask if your bag is damaged while in your care that you immediately replace it to protect the costume(s).
Please do not SWITCH OUT HANGERS - keep the hangers assigned to each garment with it's assigned piece. Upon returning your costume, bring on hangers if you were provided with one, in garment bags if one was provided and have all your pieces and accessories neatly organized. You may drop off pieces between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday. DO NOT BRING THEM TO CLASSES - thank you for your help as this is a big process to check them in and pack them up for storage. If you cannot bring them, feel free to ask someone to do it for you. There are so many costume pieces to track and record and pack away until next season. If your costume does NOT come in on the day of the costume return - you will be charged $5 for EACH DAY it is late.
We will go through each piece, check it off and make sure you are set before we send you on your way. Plan on about 10 min. or so of your day. Thanks so much!! This is very much appreciated!!
