Dance Family,
We would like to give you some information regarding our
upcoming Fall performance of The Nutcracker. It is our hope that providing you with adequate information
regarding auditions and more will allow you to make plans if you so choose to
be involved.
Auditions will
take place on the first weekend of dance classes. Saturday will be much of our ACT 2 dances (including
Snowflakes) after our classes conclude for the day. Sunday will be all of our ACT 1 dances. Dancers MUST be present to be
considered. Exclusions from this
would include severe illness, death in the family and must be discussed with
the directors BEFORE the auditions begin.
Dates will probably 9/13 & 9/14.
Rehearsals
will primarily be on Sundays but please be advised that some Saturdays will be
involved as well. If you are a
student in a Saturday class, you may want to reconsider involvement in the
production so as not to have potential conflicts. Dancers are expected to wear the appropriate attire for
dance rehearsals. If it is a
straight ballet piece, please wear black leotard and pink tights. We encourage students to wear DANCE
APPROPRIATE warm-up gear for the first 5-10 minutes of any rehearsal (leg
warmers/fitted dance sweaters).
When in doubt – ask your rehearsal director what would be
appropriate. Also, please wear the
appropriate shoes for rehearsals and purchase these as soon as the cast lists
are announced so your dancer can break them in and be comfortable.
Roles vary from young
mice to older ballet and pointe dancers.
You can look up the role descriptions at our blog by going to www.inmotionschoolofdance.blogspot.com. There you can click on the page tab for
The Nutcracker Role Details. Here
you will find the information you need to know for what roles your dancer might
be able to audition for. It will
list age and class level. Some
roles are ballet specific while others (i.e. soldiers, party scene dancers) are
not. Casting is primarily
based on abilities the dancer has shown in classes, in the audition, history of
attendance, prior Nutcracker experience and more. We also have to fit dancers into certain costumes that we
have in storage, so size may be a factor as well. As much as we try to give everyone at least ONE role – it is
possible to be cut altogether based on how many people come out for
auditions.
Costumes for many roles are provided through our dance
school. Yes, we buy many of our
own costumes. Some costumes have
even been hand made. For this
reason, it is imperative that they are cared for. All garment bags have been labeled and should coordinate
with the costume within it. We
have purchased nice hangers for these costumes and expect THOSE to be returned
as well. There are
some pieces YOU will be responsible for having: tights, shoes, sometimes pants,
and more.
Responsibilities include
mandatory rehearsal attendance, punctuality, and dedication. Also – all families will be asked to
pay a $20 Nutcracker fee at the
audition. If your child does not
get a role, your fee may be applied to your dance account or will be
refunded. Each family is
expected to sign one adult (or someone in the family) up for at least ONE duty (those will be listed on the blog on
a separate page tab). You
will be responsible for taking care of a costume for each role your child(ren)
fill for the duration of the Nutcracker season. Costumes must be returned in the same condition, with the assigned hanger. You will need to routinely check emails
and blog postings for any changes, announcements, news regarding the show or
rehearsals each week.
You will be given a ticket code to receive 2 COMP tickets per dancer per
show – that code is YOUR responsibility and you will only be able to use this
up to a certain date ONLINE.
We will give all cast families 1 week lead time for tickets sales before
information is released to the general public.
ADVERTISING This year we will attempt to create a program that
has advertising in it to help pay for our production. Sales for that may begin over the summer. If you care to
help us sell advertising – be sure to watch for emails, blog postings,
etc.
We hope you will consider joining us for our 2014
Nutcracker!
