ADULT DANCE

Last week we had YOGA as our first installment of adult dance classes. Cathy Lortie led us through some introductory poses that were great for strengthening our bodies and allowed some relaxation time as well. The benefits of Yoga are many. Positions in yoga can increase flexibility, increase lubrication of the joints, ligaments, and tendons. Yoga acts in a wholesome manner on the various body parts. It massages all the organs of the body, tones muscle, and improves posture.

This week we will present adult ballet. Class begins at 6:30. For $10, students will receive a one hour lesson in beginning ballet. You will learn terminology but mainly focus on the exercises that benefit us in the form of stretch and strength. This class should be a nice progression from yoga into next week's lesson in Modern. Ballet promotes better posture, sculpts and tones your body, develops poise and body awareness, helps relieve stress, and promotes flexibility. I found this link that may provide some insight into the connection adults have found with attending dance (ballet) classes. http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Benefits-of-Ballet-Lessons-for-Adults. There is also proof that exercise and participation in weight baring activities such as sports and dance (ballet) can reduce bone loss and prevent osteoporosis. Many of the things we will cover (and covered in yoga) can be repeated at home - if done several times a week you will find the most benefit.
